In order to make navigating round the computer as easy and as quick as possible we have developed several keywords that command the computer to go to whatever folder you want it to. The three principal keywords are JUMP, UP and NAV.
Within the main folder for a book there is a batch file called BOOK.BAT. When you want to “lock-on” to a book, you enter the command BOOK. Until this is reset from some other book, entering the keyword JUMP will take you to this book’s main folder and set the three attributes associated with it, that are used to name its dependent files.
In addition, if you wish to be able to return to a folder that is not the main one belonging to a book, you can enter the keyword JMP. After that you can go anywhere else in the computer, enter the command JUMP, and you will be back at the directory in which you set JMP.
UP is of a more permanent nature. Within the Dosextra folder you will find a file UP.TXT. Have a look inside it using Edit, and you will see that it is little more than a list of folders, with comments to remind you of what goes on in that folder. But at the beginning of each line you will see one or two letters rather reminding you of the name or function of that folder. For instance you might see B associated with Ballantyne.
Comments begin with semi-colon, and other items are separated by one or more spaces.
Edit this file to suit your own requirements. then run
MAKE_UP UP.TXT
This will create a batch file called UP.BAT. Because it is situated in the Dosextra folder it will be available from anywhere.
If you linked the author Kingston with the letter K, in UP.TXT, then the command “UP K” will take you into the Kingston folder.
Entering NAV produces a screen with all the subdirectories available from where you are. They are in alphabetical order. The directory above where you are is always called "..", so moving the bright bar with the arrow keys to sit on ".." and pressing Enter will take you up one folder. You can quickly move the bright bar to a given folder’s name by entering the first few characters of the folder’s name. You will see what you have typed in, in a box on the top right of the screen. Pressing Backspace will delete the rightmost character in this box.
When you have reached the folder you wish to be in, just press Enter, and that’s it, there you are, and if it was the folder for a book it will have already entered BOOK and locked you onto the book.
When you have a given book set, by having previously entered “BOOK” when in its folder, then entering PCN from anywhere in the computer will JUMP you to that book, and start running the book editor.
